beLocal ("we", "us", or "our") is committed to protecting your personal data. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and applicable Italian and EU data protection law.

1. Data we collect

Required to create an account:

Full name
Email address
Date of birth (to verify minimum age)
Profile photo

Optional information you may provide:

Instagram username
Current city and home country
Personal bio
Interests and vibe preferences
Cover photo

Generated through your use of the app:

Events you create or join
Venues you save or express interest in
Chat messages sent within events
Read receipts for chat messages
Notifications you receive

We do not collect sensitive personal data (e.g. health data, ethnic origin, political opinions).

2. How we use your data

Account management — to create and maintain your profile, authenticate you, and allow you to use the app.
Event and social features — to match you with other users going out, manage join requests, and enable in-app chat.
Service improvement — to understand how the app is used and fix issues.
Legal compliance — to meet our obligations under applicable law.
Security — to detect and prevent fraud or abuse.

We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not use your data for automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects.

3. Legal basis for processing

Contract performance — processing necessary to provide the service you signed up for (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
Legitimate interests — security, fraud prevention, and service improvement (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Consent — for any optional processing, such as personalisation beyond core service delivery (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). You may withdraw consent at any time.
Legal obligation — where required by law (Art. 6(1)(c) GDPR).

4. Data retention

Account data is retained for as long as your account is active.
After account deletion, data is deleted or anonymised within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
Chat messages are retained for the duration of the related event plus 30 days.
Consent records are retained for 10 years for legal compliance purposes.

5. Data sharing

We share your data only with:

Supabase — our database and authentication provider (data stored within the EU).
Vercel — our hosting provider.
Legal authorities — where required by law or to protect the safety of users.

6. Your rights

Under GDPR you have the right to:

Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data.
Erasure — ask us to delete your data ("right to be forgotten").
Portability — receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format.
Restriction — ask us to limit how we process your data in certain circumstances.
Object — object to processing based on legitimate interests.
Withdraw consent — at any time, without affecting prior processing.

To exercise any of these rights, email us at hello@getbelocal.com. We will respond within 30 days. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Italian data protection authority (Garante per la protezione dei dati personali).

7. Cookies and tracking

beLocal uses only technically necessary session cookies required to keep you logged in. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies.

8. Minimum age

beLocal is not intended for users under the age of 18. By registering, you confirm you are at least 18 years old.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes via email or in-app notification at least 30 days before they take effect.
